So this is pretty fucking killer. I am a little unclear if this is a collaboration of a proper split but I believe it's a collaboration all the way through. I had not heard S.C.O.A.M. (Student Considers Other Academic Models) before this but I am impressed. First of all the tracks are relatively short, around 3-5 minutes, I think and the sounds on this are fantastic. Squelching synths juxtaposed with harsh noise and contact mic fury. It's a fucking mess and it's fantastic. The design and packaging is pretty interesting. A fold over J card that folds over the long way and an obi strip. I kinda wish this also came in a bag though (u-line makes those rad anti-static bags that would fit this perfect). It feels a little naked and flimsy just sitting the way it does. I think I have some bags around here that will work… Either way it's, as I said before, pretty fucking killer. Limited to 50 copies.

Within a two week bus tour of the north east, I got to see Justin Lloyd aka Pregnant Spore perform each night , and each night was a seemingly chaotic association of sounds. Having heard maybe too much "harsh noise" over the years, both intensely composed freeform excellent terrible hilarious stellar epic and meandering, well I have specific critiques of this genre....Justin managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat on a number of nights and really access a meaningful or.....communicative level of noise. This night is particular was powerful to watch with sounds pulling or creating whatever may lie in the dark spaces of the aether there at the moment, well there was a few things its connected.

amazing pregnant spore review!

so stoked on this. what kind words! and what good descriptions! definitely a different perspective than i have on what this tape was about, but there is much beauty and enlightenment through ulterior perception.

Pregnant Spore is back on this cassette with five tracks of fast-moving harsh noise, very junky in sound and jumpy in theme. As with much of Rainbow Bridge’s output, the tape comes with a colorful j-card of spattered paint a la Jackson Pollack, with a numbering out of 50.

This cassette is really all over the place, and it finds Pregnant Spore doing what it does best – layering junk electronics, cutting away for a variety of warped sounds and pulsating whirs until the whole track finds a unified whole.

Side A is split into two tracks, the lengthy “Darn It! Jolly Scum” and “Satan Drape”. The first finds its rhythm almost right away, with a scratchy bass pounding leading the track while circuit-bent electronics and writhing strands of feedback often play at odds with each other. And although Pregnant Spore hits a lot of different tones with the noise here, he often returns to similar sounds, and it helps that the tracks are often rhythmically structured. A lot of screeches, tweets, and damaged sounds over the course of this side, although some do appear to be simply the effect of knob twists. There’s a really great vocal sampling of Gregorian chants, a transcendent effect of beautiful, human harmonies paired with the riotous electronics of Pregnant Spore, and “Satan Drape” becomes one of the best cuts off of Harmonious Salmon Hearts.

Side B is often similar, with “Snot Grass Pt. 1″ starting off with tons on swirled electronics color, crunchy static often deeply underneath echoes of distorted vocals, hectic electronic squeals, and overall just a generally insane noisescape. All of the acts often blend in, although “Vitamin F” and “Snot Grass Pt. 2″ do have their own distinct rhythms, and the latter features some nicely textured drums. This is good, though, because the blend means that Harmonious Salmon Hearts has managed to craft a pattern for the cassette.

I think most people know if they like the brand of noise Pregnant Spore works in. Sometimes abrasive, sometimes genuinely simple, Harmonious Salmon Hearts hits a lot of different areas of noise, but the continual factor of this tape is its squelching, warped sound, which sounds nuanced enough for me.

This has the intensity and immediacy of a piece performed live. It's a interesting interplay on HNW vs. pure feedback annihilation. Like a balancing act of sorts. It's quite a ride, it takes many turns along the way and you are not sure of where it lets you off but it's totally worth it. Audio destruction in it's purest sense. You would almost swear that a Transformer was being tortured to death on the second side. It's a little on the long side but you won't notice. Limited to 40 copies.

brobdingnagian is an experimental doom/black metal/harsh noise collective manned by andy krupinski who lives in austin, tx (also of the infamous shoegaze/black metal band crooked necks with shane of hostage pageant). i had the pleasure of playing in brobdingnagian last night near dc as well as some other local friends eric trude (stress orphan) and matt boettke (sex complex, scant, borborites). i did electronics and vocals. matt was on a kick drum-less drumset. andy does electronics and vocals. eric trude was on electronics. there was also a bass played by someone i don't know. there was also a sixth person. i'm not sure what he was doing, i don't know, i was really fucking out of it.

Pregnant Spore - Tyjaya/Xanadu

Tyjaya is simply an interesting, uncommon and ethnic first name in which I've added to my own fantasies of Xanadu to write fantastic stories in my mind. Xanadu was the name of the summer capital of Kublai Khan's Yuan Dynasty in China. Xanadu was described by the Venetian traveler Marco Polo, and in 1797 inspired a famous poem, Kubla Khan, by one of the leading English poets of the Romanticism movement, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The band Rush, a huge Pregnant Spore influence, also had a song called Xanadu based on this very poetry. Additionally, Jane Yolen wrote a book called Xanadu (and Xanadu 2) which was the actually introduction into the history of Xanadu in my life. I stumbled across the book wandering a library as a kid and became fascinated. Sonically, this release is extremely experimental in nature and covers many facets of avant sound-art using manipulated electronics and samples. Enjoy. Maybe.

We are dealing with - say - thirty-minute suite of who deliberately transforms himself, not afraid of some infantile tropes, but is conducted with a sense of just logic. Anyway, what I say, illustrates the cover of this work - candy, a sense of geometric and accident. I guess. In my view, these experimental noiseowe fun run. Feel the passion, dedication, love for music, a note of the alchemist... Sounds get where they hit. I can dig up something that makes Pregnant remembers the Spore... And it is a creature so prolific that even I will certainly write about it.

This is an excellent sampling of two of the more interesting noise acts of late, Pregnant Spore and Actuary. Although Actuary is the A side when I received my cassette it was wound to play Pregnant Spore first so here I go: The PS tracks on this cassette have that sound that I totally covet. Justin Marc Lloyd is somehow able to make noise that sounds like it was recorded in the 1960's. It's intense, moving and totally rages but when you listen to it you feel like you have uncovered something. Like a noise loving Indiana Jones. The packaging has the same look. Like a page from that awesome book, "Our Universe" that every kid loved in elementary school. The Actuary side has a similar almost vintage sound as well. A little less harsh and not quite as brutal as their previous releases, but this is not a bad thing. This track is more restrained and tense. It's a new side to what is becoming one of my new favorite noise acts. Both sides of this tape are fantastic and its limited to only 50 so I recommend grabbing this as soon as you are done reading this.

In many ways it's not easy to pin down the music, from both of these artists, as any one genre or label - there are a multitude of styles and manifestations, and it's all the better for it. This limited edition cassette is a split between White Dog and Pregnant Spore, and they are very closely mirrored in terms of musical DNA, sometimes almost cloning each other to produce a very odd whole of other-worldly atmospheres and dreams.

Both artists riff-off elements of classic ambient Krautrock, amongst other inspirations, employing circuit-bending improv, experimental electronics and samples, as well as echoes of industrial noise, space-hop, tape-glitch and loop-drones. There is a synthesis of styles between White Dog and Pregnant Spore that constantly veers between the various musical borderlines, to create something unique, eclectic and weirdly unclassifiable, in this combined missive from the surreal, cosmic outer limits. The music is immediately attractive, with an assortment of styles and influences, but there are harsher, more challenging elements mixed in, to offset any listener nonchalance - a lot of the sounds are funnelled through, or accompanied by, an askew noise generator with discordant glitches, static, hiss and rumble.

Note: as all of the tracks segue into one another, on both sides, its hard to tell where one track starts and another ends, and the cassette cartridge isn't clearly marked, so unfortunately I wasn't able to definitively differentiate which side was by White Dog and the other by Pregnant Spore. In a way, it doesn't really matter, as they are very close in terms of musical generation, and just adds to the over-all enigmatic atmosphere of this release.

Side 1: (which I think is White Dog)
This first section incorporates Forbidden Planet/Louis & Bebe Barron type ambient electronics, blended in with the submerged echoes of a Victorian industrial machine churning away. Then we have Radiophonic Workshop/Space Invaders type bleeps and blurps, all mixed into the constant refrain of what sounds like a space-leviathan waking and yawning, in the background. Next, a syncopated beat takes over and takes us on a space-disco journey past the stars. A lot of these cosmic sounds are redolent of 60's/70's synthesiser/Moog electronics, though tempered by more post-modern, experimental elements and noise.

What seems like the second track on this side is made up from a dense strata of electronic samples, with faint vagaries of distant children's voices all overlaid with a cyber-machine wave-form, undulating in and out, which gradually subsumes everything else as it builds and throbs. This is straight out of a classic, 1970's science fiction film soundtrack. One is also reminded of similar ghostly nostalgia-reveries from the likes of Boards of Canada, though this is less melodious or 'pleasant' and seems less playful than that; it is more epic, austere and inhuman, creating a subtly unnerving tension and hence being closer, perhaps, to classic ambient Throbbing Gristle, or similar.

Side 2:
One strand starts off with what sounds like mutant crickets, chirping away, then phasing into a kind of soft drum & base beat, which reaches a crescendo of high-end hiss and then feeds into a dust-laden needle stuck in a groove. This transforms into robotic underwater voices, plus synthesiser-glitch, with deteriorated radio samples gradually coming to the fore, then the stuck groove again. Finally we come full circle, as the strange, squeaky insect banter creeps back, with all of these tendrils flowing in and out of each other, amongst a plethora of other bizarre sounds and rhythms, creating a circular template of shifting, deep sound, which constantly surprises and fascinates.

One side is the more 'ambient' of the two, with the other being more 'hyper-kinetic', but perhaps this is a simplification, as both artists veer between a variety of experimental modes, and have created, with this combined release, a beautifully mysterious and hypnotic spell from the inner-space landscape of weird, alien life-forms and galaxy-wide depths. This music is very visual and could easily accompany, to wonderful effect, an independent, avant-garde science fiction film. But, ultimately, an external translation through imagery would be unnecessary, as both of these artists, with their compelling retro-futuristic space-noise, utilise, amongst other talents, their cinematic sensibilities to conjure up an uncanny, cosmic landscape for our minds eye.

Here's a tripped-out set that I stumbled on one of the many, way underground cassette tape releases than seem to be all the rage with the bedroom studio hep kids these days. This is a guitar drone album whose press release gleefully states that all the sounds on this recording were made with a guitar. Now, as a musician I tend to be a bit of a synth geek, but I do very much appreciate guitarists who are interested in melting and mangling the sounds of their guitar as you'll hear here. It's sort of like the trippier, medatative moments of Slowdive or Godspeed You Black Emperor, but, y'know, without all of those annoyances like the rest of the band or songs. I swear I meant that last sentence as a complement.

It's almost useless to discuss songs here, as the tracks are all guitar drones and simple but effective riffs sometimes extended to insane proportions. What you're looking for here is texture - choosing the track you're going to play is like choosing the your ice cream flavor. Maybe it's a bigger decision as several of the tracks here will last far longer than it takes for you to eat your 'squid-flavored' ice cream (if you want to try that flavor, head here and look for the Ice Cream City:http://www.namja.jp/):. Anyway, I find myself typically going for the marathon sessions on the second disc where "Sunflower" and "I Miss You, Don't Fall Asleep Yet" space out for around a half hour each. It suits me well as I screw around on the internet, make trippy marker art drawings, and so forth. That said, the first disc does present more of those hardcore drone-y sounds that are akin to sticking your head in the cosmic freezer.

Most of the music labelled 'new age' seems to sort of blow. I don't think anyone's slapping this set with that label, but it's much more likely to teleport your brain to the calm, intergalactic cloud that so-called new age music tends to imply. At any rate, this is not a bad introduction to the strange world of underground cassette tape drones if you haven't already made the plunge.

Lessons -- DAVID BOWIE MARYLAND [800 Wild!]

I have no idea what David Bowie has to do with any of this, but Lessons are a Baltimore duo consisting of Justin Marc Lloyd (also of Pregnant Spore, among many others) and Andy Livingston (Ghost Volcano), both of whom appear to be involved in a wide variety of experimental / noise / WTF projects. This one involves the twisted use of psychedelic sounds -- not in the acid-rock sense, but in the sense of people whacked-out on heavy drugs and interpreting sound and color in a manner very different than most people (witness their eye-raping psychedelic pinwheel background at their web page, linked below, for visual evidence) -- and a devolved anti-rock stance to impart some seriously tripped-out sonic meanderings that walk a thin line between severely damaged art-rock and outright noise. A lot of this sounds like keyboards might have been the original instrument of sonic mutation although they list their sound sources as electronics, field recordings violin, and record players, so who knows? Whatever they're using, they're certainly making a disorienting racket… but for all the noisy sonic bombardment, there's an element of melody (sort of) inherent to most of these pieces, not to mention a persistent motif of minimalist percussion / beats and endless repetition that keeps the pieces anchored in a realm at least tenuously related to music. This sounds like it should be some long-lost demo recorded in a college bedroom in Providence, but apparently people in Baltimore scarf acid too. Who knew? Fans of diseased, rhythmic antimusic will love this.

Some-fucking-how, Justin Barger (Zombie Militia) was able to "remix" a bunch of unreleased Pregnant Spore material into some sort of grating, absolutely and undeniably violent walls of harsh, harsh, harsh scapes that viciously drone, hiss, screech and crush. And by saying "harsh" three times, I am referring to the shrill nature of Masonna and Incapacitants along with that saturated, thick, rumble of Macronympha. JB is an odd and controversial character. You may know him as "Jesus Faggot Christ" on a number of noise forums out there. His personality definitely comes out in his rework of Pregnant Spore's glitchy, mangled electronic sound.

the split is heavily centered around new world order stuff, primarily false flag terror. however, this split was made before my project false flag came into existence so that i had a centralized outlet for all of that.

self-righteous cum review

A nice and somewhat surprisingly mellow tape from Justin. After Playing here last month (check the post below) we did a big trade and this is one of the many PS tapes I got. Each side starts with thick, melodic guitar drones swimming around, gradually getting harsher and harsher as the track goes on. Vocals cry out just below the surface while crunchy feedback loops start to take over. Each track is similar but different enough to feel good sitting next to each other and stand on their own if you only play one side at a time. The only gripe I have is that like some of his other tapes the tracks might be a bit to long, but all in all a good tape that suits the summer well with its combination of relaxation/oppression. Nice cover art that has a good use of color without being overbearing. The canary yellow pro tape looks and sounds nice too. -Andrew Quitter

weedtemple, a really great blog centered around noise, drone, etc., posted a nice review of my tape on dynamo sound collective under the dementia and hope trails moniker.

Justin Marc Lloyd gradually made his name in the Baltimore underground through his massively prolific noise/harsh noise project Dim Dusk Moving Gloom, later renamed Pregnant Spore. With Dementia and Hope Trails he decided to take things in the new, less noisy and more floating direction. While his Depressstill had a lot of harsh ambience to it, Ethereal Hurtis much more polished and smoothed out. Two 10-minute long sides of textural, echoing drone much in the vein of Geoff Sexton’s Suburban Sun Births, although not as dark. Lloyd creates an otherworldly thick fog with God knows how many effects, creating that familiar “what the fuck did he use to create this sound” feeling, which I had for the first time when I heard Super Minerals’ “Abyssal” off their The Pelagics.

The first of the two tracks, “Go” (or at least I think it’s the first, the sides are not labeled A and B), conjures up what appears to be a synthesizer equivalent of shoegaze, the extremely stretched out variety of shoegaze that is. It’s hard to recognize the melodies in this – if there are any – all the note changes are in such a distance from each other that it might also be a skeleton of a melody – or no melody at all. The endless washes of gentle white noise and distant high-pitched apocalyptic sounds add further to the confusion. The flip-side, “Dead” is clearer and somewhat faster, with a recognizable melody and a clearer sound similar to the likes of Marble Sky, Pale Blue Sky or Sky Stadium; a perfect rest from the snowstorm of the previous track.

Justin Marc Lloyd's tape is not exactly reinventing the wheel, but it's rather like a well-done homework in ambient and drone music. However, I have a feeling that if Justin will be able to master the hazy sound presented on "Go" and make it more personal and recognizable, he might be seriously going places.

review of "slippery sleep"

This is deeply weird stuff, probably best described as avant-garde psychedelic noise. On "Star-Gazing in Beds of Blood (Parts 1 & 2)," strange cut-up noises bleat and squeak in a rhythmic fashion that has just enough variation to keep it from sounding like a loop but in a fashion monochromatic enough to render it hypnotic, and as time passes, space-rock keyboards rise from the background like celestial cloud music, droning and shimmering over the grotesque bedrock rhythm. Eventually the keyboards die away and are replaced by pure noise in the form of bursts of static and tortured sounds like devices being shaken apart, only to return to the original rhythmic sound as the keyboard drones emerge again, this time not quite so heavenly. As the keyboards disappear again, the grand finale arrives in a deteriorating cacaphony of diseased sound. On the flip side, "In Your Hive" is dominated by more diseased rhythmic noises, which are joined after a while by lots of groaning, wailing sounds and other forms of sonic effluvia that turn the piece into something like a low-grade acid trip. As the track progresses, the sound gets denser, thicker, and stranger... and still the bedrock rhythm persists, as the sounds laid over it grow ever more deranged. It's chaos, yes, but remarkably controlled chaos, with an unusual and interesting style.
